Pastor Tate writes as a Mississippi-born Black man, rooted spiritually in the Black Church, but having to navigate a largely white world. The author narrates a variety of life experiences that are grounded in the American Black experience, mediated by family history and faith; affected by race, region, social class, and gender; and informed by both resistance and accommodation to the dominant white culture. As we journey through the text, we’ll consider several tender concepts informed by the author’s identity and life experience, including race, racism, whiteness, white supremacy, nationalism, racial reconciliation, and the multiethnic church.
